Burning Up

How many calories does your body burn, and how can you find out?

One sure way to find out is to count every calorie you eat for a week and then check your weight to see if you gained or lost pounds during that time.

Every pound is 3,500 calories. If you gained half a pound in one week, you ate 1,750 excess calories.

So if you take the total number of calories you ate for the week and subtract 1,750, you’ll know how many calories your body burned in a week. Divide that figure by 7 for your daily calorie requirement.

You can also use calorie calculators to estimate your daily calorie requirement. They can be found online by searching for “calorie calculators” or “estimate calorie requirements.”

The estimates from calorie calculators will vary, but they all take into account your level of physical activity. If you are “very active,” your body will require more calories than if you are “sedentary.”

You might as well tell the truth to the calculator and get the real number. If you don’t exercise, you don’t exercise. You’re not going to change for some calculator.

You can still lose a pound a week by cutting five hundred calories per day out of your diet. Everyone will think you’ve been working out, and really, isn’t that just as good?
